Petition for Taxpayer Relief

Whereas property tax rates in Colorado are set to skyrocket in the next year; and,
Whereas Governor Polis and the Democratic Party supported Amendment B, with deceptive language that repealed the Gallagher Constitutional protection and caused property tax rates to soar on residential property; and,
Whereas Proposition HH, the proposal to eliminate TABOR refunds and stick Colorado taxpayers with the brunt of property tax increases was rejected by voters; and,

Whereas during the recent special session Gov. Polis and the Democratic majority in the Colorado legislature failed to fulfill their responsibility to provide Coloradans substantial relief from impending property tax rate increases; and,

Whereas SB23-108, sponsored by Senator Baisley and passed by the Colorado Legislature, gives local governments the power to temporarily reduce mill levy rates and/or offer tax refund credits in order to provide property tax relief to Colorado citizens; and,

Whereas members of the board of Weld County Board of County Commissioners attempted to raise the mill levy rate twice and increase the financial burden on Weld property owners; and,

I hereby request that the Weld County Board of County Commissioners support Commissioner Lori Saine's resolution and honor the Weld County Home Rule Charter's five percent growth limitation per year and stop attempts to raise the mill levy rate, and/or provide tax refunds to Weld County property owners to offset the increase the impending property tax rates; and,

I also hereby request that my local government supports Commissioner Lori Saine's resolution to use the power given local governments through SB23-108 to take direct action to temporarily lower the mill levy rate, and/or provide tax refunds to property owners to offset the increase in the impending property tax rates.
Respectfully signed,
